How to make Asparagus in the Microwave

by Stephanie

Asparagus in the Microwave is a favorite for a dinner side dish in my family. I just hate cooking it in the oven because it heats up the house, but…cooking it in the microwave is perfect, fast, and easy! This post contains affiliate links.

You don’t need much. You basically need:

When the asparagus is ready to eat, you can top it with a few different ideas:

  • salt and pepper
  • salted butter
  • olive oil + lemon + minced garlic
  • garlic salt

How do you make Asparagus in the Microwave?

First, wash the asparagus and use a knife or scissors to cut off the woody stems at the bottom. I find scissors make it easier and quicker to do.

My favorite way to make asparagus is topped with lemon, garlic and olive oil.

So, when I steam the asparagus in the microwave, I add about 3 tablespoons of water to the microwave-safe baking dish as well as a couple slices of lemon.

Cover the dish with a lid or plate.

Microwave the asparagus on HIGH for 3 minutes. It should be tender, but crisp. If not, heat for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Carefully remove the dish with pot holders.

Remove the asparagus from the water and place on a plate. Squeeze some extra lemon juice, if desired. Add a teaspoon of minced garlic as well as drizzles of olive oil and gently toss.

Or, add your favorite seasoning. Salted butter is another favorite we love. Just add a tablespoon and while it’s still hot and gently rub it on the stalks.

Serve immediately!
