If you can, use an 8 oz block of cheddar and shred the cheese yourself versus using packaged shredded cheese.

In a microwave-safe bowl, add 2 tablespoons of flour and 2 tablespoons of butter. Cook on HIGH for 30 seconds, until butter is completely melted.

Stir the flour and butter until it’s completely mixed together.

Add salt and stir.

Microwave 30 seconds. Stir again.

Add 1 cup of milk and mix until the flour/butter mixture and the milk are completely combined.

Microwave for 1 minute.

Fold in the entire 8 oz of cheddar cheese to the milk mixture. Your sauce will start to thicken as you melt the cheese into the milk mixture.

Once you’ve combined all the cheese into the mixture, cook on HIGH for an additional 30 seconds.

Stir the mixture and if it’s thick and creamy, you’re done. If the cheese isn’t completely incorporated and melted, heat for an additional 30 seconds and stir again.

Serve warm.

If you’re using this cheese sauce to make macaroni and cheese, pour the entire bowl into the macaroni and stir it up. This amount is perfect for a 16 oz package of pasta.

It’s also perfect for a dipping sauce for steamed veggies like broccoli and cauliflower or for dipping pretzels and more.
