This snack mix has been my very favorite since I was a kid. I used to help my mom make it in the oven. I’ve been making Microwave Chex Mix a lot quicker, in 15 minutes, for a few years now.
My family cannot tell the difference between the oven and microwave version. It’s delicious both ways!

What do you need to make Microwave Chex Mix?
I make my Chex Mix a little different than the classic recipe on the box. You can use the same ingredients. I just use different ratios and different cooking times.
We also have tree nut allergies in our family, so we don’t use tree nuts, only peanuts. We also don’t really care for the bagel chips, so we leave those out. On the original recipes posted around the internet, I see so many people love to comment that “bagel chips weren’t in the original recipe.” But you can make this recipe your own! Put whatever you want it! It’s really good with Cheerios added into it, too!
You’ll need:
- 8 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp seasoning salt
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 cups Wheat Chex
- 2 cups Rice Chex
- 2 cups Corn Chex
- 1 cup pretzels
- 1 cup peanuts
- optional: 1 cup mixed nuts or bagel chips
How do you make Microwave Chex Mix?
First, combine all the cereal, pretzels, nuts, etc. into a big microwave-safe bowl. I like to use a large glass mixing bowl.
Then, mix it all up.
Next, in a smaller microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Then, add all the additional seasonings together and whisk until it’s completely mixed.
Pour the seasoning mixture over the cereal mixture and toss it until it’s well coated.
Then, microwave for 2 minutes on HIGH.
Let it sit for 1 minute and then give it a stir.
Microwave on HIGH for another 2 minutes, then let it sit for 10 minutes in the microwave with the door closed.
Remove it from the microwave and give it a stir.
Enjoy immediately or transfer to a covered container.
How long can you keep Microwave Chex Mix?
I keep it in a sealed container for up to a month.
When I first make it, I put it in a sealed ziplock bag to keep fresh. Then, if I’m giving as gifts, I put it in cute holiday tins right before gifting it.
Can you make Microwave Chex Mix up ahead of time?
Absolutely! I’ll make it up a week before giving it to friends and family. I have a batch sitting here ready to go to our family get together on Christmas Day I made last weekend.
I just keep it in sealed ziplock bags to keep it fresh.
